In the 1950's when I took my studies in Medicine only a few lectures were devoted to the physiology of Nutrition. We were not told about the 49 essential (required) nutrients. The importance of fiber in our diet was not emphasized. Similarly for Tumour Biology. Here it seems we did not know that tumours are heteroploid possessing many genotypes which can be identified by karyotypic analysis and/or by DNA cytophotometry- the latter eliminating the current qualitative subjective method for patho-cytodiagnosis. Its not surprising that many errors occur with such a method. Also it seems oncologists do not seem to appreciate the importance of stages of the cell cycle as a tool for rationale cancer chemo and/or radio therapy. I stressed the importance of such knowledge in my publications in the late 1960s which still seem to be overlooked as they dont seem to be routinely used by oncologists.!
Although we have accumulated a vast body of knowledge in both nutrition and cancer - especially in the last half century- medical students still only receive a few formal lectures in both of these arenas. In my opinion both Tumor Biology and Nutrition should have the status of fully credited university courses (viz designated by 101) and furthermore they should not be restricted only to medical students.
