DCIS and DNA cytophotometry

A recent article in the November 25, 2011 issue of the Winnipeg Free press prompted me to post this blog.
Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS) is a non invasive condition of the breast in which the abnormal cells lining their ducts have not yet spread to other tissues in the breast. The reader of this blog may find this link re general information about breast cancer helpful http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/treatment/breast/healthprofessional/page5/AllPages .
The newspaper article briefly outlines the two commonly used screening methods, namely the (Xray ) film screen mammography- an advancement from what they call the "outmoded mammography and its guidelines used 25 to 40 years ago", and the recently introduced digital mammography which allows radiologists to assess "high-resolution breast images on a computer screen". They caution that because the latter is a more sensitive screening test that it may also be associated with a higher risk of false positives.
As early as the the 1960's Emson and Kirk in Saskatoon had used a quantitative technique called Desoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) cytophotometry in the "diagnosis of early or equivocal lesions". The article entitled " Value of Desoxyribonucleic acid (DNA ) in evolution of carcinomas of the human breast" .H.E. Emson and H. Kirk. was published in Cancer 20: 1248. 1967.
The Canadian Association of Radiologists whom I understand are responsible for formulating "new guidelines " may wish to review this quantitative (DNA Cytophotometry ) technique.

  1. Its now 6 months after my blog publication. I have sent to CMAJ journal dilemmas re this diagnosis test, and the value of DNA cytophotometric test. They did not even publish my comments in the section letters to the editor. I should not be surprised as it seems that all my comments and suggestions are routinely ignored and/or acknowledged.- Sometimes I wonder why do I put so much effort in trying to promote these ideas. This week (Apr 17,2012) will be the annual past presidents breakfast of the Manitoba Chapt. of the CFPC I hope I can briefly comment on a new paradigm four Medical practice- However I have my doubts that I will have the opportunity. Even if I do , I doubt if it will have any effect.- doctors will continue their present course of allopathic medicine
