In an earlier blog, I made reference to the scientific literature which showed that hydergine may play a major significant role in delaying the progression of brain damage from heart attacks as well as senile dementia because of its pharmacological properties as a free radical scavenger, and its protective role against brain damage under anoxic conditions.
It seems that the neurologists and neurosurgeons are not evaluating and/or administrating this drug in their treatments for those patients suffering from various forms of concussions. Hydergine may be administered in 3 ways, injection (arterial), sublingual tablets ,or orally and in various doses. It is necessary to review these doses in earlier editions of the CPS as the current edition(2012) only has devoted 3 lines for a drug which once was the 5th most prescribed drug in Europe !
I would suggest that coaches should consider the use of this drug on a preventative basis before scheduled games just like they do with helmets and other protective head gear. Before a hockey player goes on the ice and/or a football player on the field each player should take hydergine orally. If this is not practical for financial and/or other reasons then if they should get boarded and suffer a concussion at a game then they should immediately be given a sublingual tablet. In the case of a heart attack , stroke or other significant brain damage the health team might consider giving these victims and/or patients besides a sublingual pill also an injection of hydergine into the carotid artery- preferably within a few minutes of the event.- even before CPR is commenced..
