The medulla of the adrenal gland produces adrenalin (epinephrine) and nor adrenalin (norepinephrine ) play major roles in controlling our blood pressure. Cardiologist who are currently the doctors who are studying the role and/or control of hypertension as a risk factor for heart disease and strokes may have forgotten their basic anatomy namely that these cells of the adrenal gland are derived from the neural crest and are therefore part of the nervous system.
Maybe if we left the management of hypertension to our neurology colleagues we might achieve better control of this significant risk factor for heart disease and strokes. If not we should at least seek their opinions.
Reviewing the embryological origin of other body tissues and cells might help us better understand the pathogenesis and treatment of other diseases . For example knowledge that melanocytes s which are also derived from the neural creast might give us a different approach to the treatment of melanomas. Some have even suggested that the islet of Langerhan are also derived from the neural creast.
