Possible Relationship between lithium and Alzheimer's

The 3 main structural changes found in the aging brain commonly associate with dementia and/or Alzheimer's disease that one finds in doing an internet search are: 1.amyloid plaques 2 tau proteins 3.neurofibrillary tangles . In the current special winter edition-2016-2017 of Life Extension Magazine in their article entitled "Remarkable new method to combat brain aging ", the authors mention that low doses of lithium inhibit an enzyme called GSK-3 "... that causes the formation of abnormal tau proteins and neurofibrillary tangles...". Regarding the accumulation of beta amyloid plaques the consensus is that they are the result of impaired glucose/insulin action- often called a type III diabetes. They also note that "... Colostrum-derived proline-rich polypeptide by modifying gene expression can reduce the amount of beta amyloid precursor production and damage to tau proteins ..." For details the readers of this post are urged to read their most fascinating article including their extensive Reference list of 74 the first of which mentions that the overall dementia incidence has declined 10-20% per decade starting in the 1980's N Engl J Med.2016;374(6):523-32. Physicians commonly use lithium albeit in higher doses for the management of their patients suffering with a diagnosis of Manic depressive disorder. It would be interesting to study if the incidence of Alzheimers in this patient group is lower than in the general population Could their be a correlation.
