Mitochondria play a significant role in energy production of cells and in generating free radicals associated with aggressive physical activity. In a recent Life Extension Newsletter (March 03,2012 ) the authors suggest that mitochondrial dysfunction may proceed memory loss of Alzheimers.
Hypercholesteremia is considered a risk factor for atherosclerosis. Statin drugs are one group of medications often prescribed to lower this blood cholesterol. One of the side effects of statin drugs is muscle weakness. Some researches suggest this may be due to its effects on mitochondria. Another side effect of statin drugs is myopathy specifically cardiomyopathy
With all these correlation's maybe a retrospective study to see if there is any correlation with onset of Alzheimer's in those patients who are on and who are not on statin drugs.
I should interject that I am of the opinion that since cholesterol is one of the nutrients which has anti-oxidant and free radical scavenger properties, that we probably should not even be lowering blood cholesterol in the first place.
The mitochondria looks promising. Please pass by and visit my project. I enjoyed your article.
